The Evolution of
Modern Aesthetics

Hyundai Motors continues to redefine class-leading
beauty and sensual design with premium values.

Fluidic Sculpture

A dynamic and living beauty.
The essence beyond the sculpture.

Great designs can considerably increase the value of advanced technologies by making them shine. ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ is Hyundai Motor’s design philosophy which aspires to create advanced designs. Fluidic Sculpture’ takes its inspiration from nature and through a unique process turns this inspiration into a great design. The end result embodies nature’s vibrant energy and dynamism. Breaking down the barriers between art and automobile design, ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ has given a unique design identity to Hyundai Motor.

Hyundai Motor introduced ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ to the world in 2009, with the launch of Sonata which received overwhelmingly positive reviews for its unique and stunning look. Hyundai Motor subsequently announced Fluidic Sculpture 2.0’ and has been applying it to its new models since 2013.

Most advanced HMI-based design technology
that reads your mind

Hyundai Motor’s design philosophy goes beyond aesthetics by eliminating the unnecessary and incorporating all of the necessary elements into a great design. Although Hyundai Motor is known for its striking exterior designs, every aspect of the design is carefully thought through, especially the interior design, to ensure great ergonomics which leads to exceptional comfort for drivers and passengers alike.

Clustering and placing buttons in the most convenient locations, fine-tuning the design to a tenth of an inch and using materials that convey a sense of refinement when touched are all parts of Hyundai Motor’s design practice based on Human Machine Interface (HMI) principles. Following the HMI principles, Hyundai Motor is creating interior designs that are simple, intuitive and ergonomic which leads to higher levels of emotional satisfaction.

A Sensual Experience:
Discover Our Way of
Communicating with Cars

Integrating the ergonomically designed “HMI” with Hyundai Motor’s cutting-edge technology, Hyundai Motor’s HMI intuitively analyzes driver’s regular behavior patterns to provide only the necessary information to best suit the driver’s needs. Maximizing the driving experience by creating a safer, convenient environment for drivers to focus and operate with greater simplicity is our advanced way of connecting your senses in the most effective and efficient manner.

  • “Touch” button that is
    simple and usable

Easy to operate with practical functions, Hyundai Motor’s driver-centric design understands your driving needs by providing the ultimate convenience that does not distract your driving. At Hyundai Motor, a car is no longer just a means of transportation – it is a moving smart device that is innovative and inspiring. Our great collaboration between creatively talented designers and engineers brings enhanced simplicity to the Center Fascia that now features just a minimal number of buttons for a more efficient and pleasant driving experience.

  • Intuitive cluster

Simple and intuitive. Hyundai Motor’s sophisticated cluster pursues a simple design with easy-to-read information and attention-grabbing colors to provide all the necessary driving information you need while you are on the road.

  • Openness for safety

Hyundai Motor’s spacious, roomy interior offers plenty of space to provide an expanded field of vision and viewing comfort by considering driver’s eye sight in its elevated design. From the shape of every seat to the location of the instrument cluster features, our design efficiently maximizes both practicality and driving safety. Hyundai Motor’s creative innovation in the concept car area further aims to integrate a high-tech camera in place of the side mirror for an even wider view.

  • Unlimited growth potential
    leveraging five senses

With future development of automotive technology, Hyundai Motor will embrace the new concept of the Human Machine Interface (HMI) with innovative technology to leverage the essential five senses of man. In addition to the latest CES event showing the possibilities of IT technology converging with a smart car, Hyundai Motor promises a brighter future by creating sensual and dynamic experiences with the emerging voice recognition, motion recognition and touch technology.

Creating designs embodying
the DNA of ‘Modern Premium’

Hyundai Motor’s designers working in Korea, the US, Germany, China, Japan and India, each bring their own unique perspective, a key source of inspiration and competitiveness. Needless to say, designer’s imagination is the earth from which innovative new designs blossoms. Aiming to stimulate the creativity of its designers, Hyundai Motor recently launched ‘My Baby’ projects for both Korea-based and overseas based designers.

The main design team at Namyang Technology Research Center is also collaborating with overseas design studios in Europe, the US and Japan, in order to strengthen their competitiveness. Hyundai Motor will continue to support various projects to create innovative new designs which are engaging and satisfying for our customers

Creative ideas that break the mold, the thrill of challenging the norm, cutting-edge technology and the
ability to understand people’s desires enable the Design Center to gauge future megatrends. Our global
design network draws upon inspiration from major cities in the US, Europe, Japan, China and India to
predict and lead worldwide trends.

Local trends and consumer life styles from around the
world are studied to create original images and concepts.

Sketching and

Based on a set concept, ideas take more solid form
through sketching and rendering.

After rendering, a design is selected and created into a
3D clay form for further development.

Digital (CAS)

The design is recreated through a computer-generated
3D image whose data is then used for assessing design
and aerodynamics.

Virtual reality (VR)

After rendering, a design is selected and created into a
3D clay form for further development.

Design quality is ensured by focusing development on
parts design using new technologies and materials. By
developing materials and colors that are a step ahead
of trends, car designs are brought to life.

Perfecting design with
cutting-edge technology!

A vehicle model is created within a virtual space through auto simulation and 3D digital design. After
models are put through a variety of tests such as simulation analysis and installation evaluation, potential
problems are filtered in advance to optimize the design process and shorten the development period.

  • Body
    structure design

The body structure acts much like the skeleton of the
human body, providing the basic framework for driving
parts like the engine and chassis, as well as various
convenience features. We consider all the qualities
required of a car, such as strength, crash resistance,
aerodynamics, noise, fuel efficiency and space when
designing a body structure to produce a car that is safe,
    comfortable, fast and economical.

  • Chassis design

We design chassis systems that relay power to vehicles
and enable driving. The chassis system comprises the
suspension, steering, fuel, cooling, exhaust and intake,
    mounting, control and brake systems.

  • Functional design

The exterior and interior of a vehicle are designed with
a focus on providing a pleasant, comfortable and safe
environment for occupants. A new technology called
adaptive headlamps feature low-beam bulbs that swivel
left and right in response to the steering wheel so that
they illuminate the direction where the driver is looking.
Additionally, the lamps move up and down depending on
the number of passengers and vehicle yaw.

  • Analysis

Noise, Vibration, Harshness (NVH) analysis To control
noise and vibrations generated during driving, we analyze
the causes of vibrations and characteristics of how the
vibrations are relayed to passengers. This process is
conducted via computer simulation before an actual car
is made. Once the initial evaluations have been carried
out to produce the optimal solution, a prototype car is
    then manufactured.

  • Durability analysis

A virtual car model is created to obtain quantitative data
on the load that is transferred from the road surface to
the suspension and car body while driving. Through this
process, we carry out detailed modeling and durability
analysis. The initial durability assessment of the car body
and key chassis parts allows us to pinpoint possible
problems and come up with solutions to improve
performance, as well as to cut costs and weight.
The information is then reflected in the design process.

  • Crash analysis

When developing cars, analysis of local crash
requirements and local regulations is performed and
research is conducted on new crash regulations, body
structures, and engineering methods to secure optimal
    crash performance.
